Posted: September 25, 2008 Filed under: movies | Tags: Johnny Depp, Pirates 4 Leave a commentI haven’t really had time to blog this week as Manfrengensen and I have been caught up in talking about the election and upcoming debates. I have also been posting my thoughts on the situation elsewhere. I’m too wound up at the moment to even write about the current situation. But I do think the debate should proceed tomorrow night. I want to hear what the candidates have to say.

In other news from the world of bullshit: Johnny Depp has signed on to do Pirates of the Caribbean 4. Are you fucking kidding me? Both 2 and 3 sucked sewage. In a recent episode I saw of The Simpsons, Bart joins 4-H and drives a bailer off the fields and through all kinds of other stuff. He runs over a pond, and the fish come out in a cube, etc. Then he runs over a pile of manure and the bailer spits out copies of Pirates 3. Hilarious. Hilarious, because it is so true.

Went back to Jenny Craig today. This week was not as successful. I didn’t cheat on the diet at all, but I only lost 1.2 pounds. So that puts me down a total of five. I guess that’s success, but I was hoping (and granted, I know I was kidding myself) that in the first three weeks or so I would drop ten pounds. That the weight would come off me like a coat.
I didn’t drink as much water as I should have this past week as well. Gotta be sure to do that in the future. Plus, Manfrengensen and I went out for dinner Friday night to our favorite Mexican place, where I probably should have opted for one soft taco rather than two. But they are so tasty…
Beverly Hills Chihuahua
Posted: September 19, 2008 Filed under: movies | Tags: Beverly Hills Chihuahua 1 CommentSeriously — how does a movie like this get green-lighted? Which Disney exec read this script or heard the pitch and said, “People love chihuahuas! They are so funny looking, and we can give them accents. It will be tits.” (A friend told me that based on his experience with the director, Tony Scott, “tits” is the expression Scott uses to affirm the things he likes. As in: “It’s tits.”) But you know, some exec thinks Beverly Hills Chihuahua will make their money back. Somebody’s going to be keeping his or her fingers crossed opening weekend, watching the box office returns like his or her job depends on it.
But what do I know? Next year, I could be extolling the virtues of the soon-to-be-released Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2. More likely I will be bitching about it.
And who was the agent who said to Drew Barrimore or to Andy Garcia, “Hey! Have I got a script for you – you’ve just got to get onboard with this one. It will be the feather in the cap of your career. It’s called Beverly Hills Chihuahua“?? Yeah, yeah, it’s going to be tits. (More likely something that rhymes with tit.)
Whatever, maybe the movie’s great. Maybe it’s going to blow the doors off talking dog comedies. Maybe it’s like the “Spartacus” of dog movies.
Woof.
David Foster Wallace is Dead
Posted: September 14, 2008 Filed under: Books, Celebrities | Tags: David Foster Wallace Leave a commentOne of Manfrengensen’s favorite authors, David Foster Wallace was one of our generation’s most brilliant writers. His wife found his body Friday night, an apparent suicide.
Years ago, when Manfrengensen had quit his job at the TVGuide, he spent two weeks on the couch reading Wallace’s quintessential work, Infinite Jest. His copious laughter still rings in my ears.
Righteous…right just shut up!
Posted: September 13, 2008 Filed under: family, movies | Tags: Burn After Reading Leave a commentLast night Manfrengensen and I got out to see Burn After Reading. It was okay. Not the Coen’s best, but Brad Pitt was fun to watch. I think he’s better in the supporting roles. But that’s just me.

Anyway, before the show started, I went to the ladies’ room, which was a hike from our theater’s corner of the multiplex. So I was making my way there, and the only other people in this long hallway were this guy, late-thirties perhaps, with his kids, neither of whom could have been over eight or nine years old. And he was yelling at them — yelling — about how they should stay to one side of the hall so other people could pass. We were in this huge, wide hall, and no one else was around. Maybe he’d started berating them before they’d turned the corner into this hall, but still. He had this accent, like New-Jersey-construction/Sopranos-extra kind of accent. He had the leathery face of a smoker. Just yelling and berating these two silent kids. And then they turned to go into their theater — to see Righteous Kill. Who the hell is taking two little kids to see Righteous Kill??
I’m not even sure Edison (who’s 8 ) is ready for something like Raiders of the Lost Ark. This guy’s taking his to see Righteous Kill?? I don’t want to tell anyone how to raise their kids, but WTF? Seriously — I know you love DeNiro, but what is an eight-year-old going to take away from Righteous Kill? Can’t you wait until your ex-wife’s got them for the night?

Is that too mean?
Sorry.
Sarah Palin Interview
Posted: September 12, 2008 Filed under: Politics | Tags: Charles Gibson, Sarah Palin Leave a commentI’m not going to comment on what she said in the interview with Charles Gibson. I’m not going to analyze the questions he asked. But I do want to ask: Does anyone else find it odd that we couldn’t really see her face for a lot of the interview? That her legs were actually in the center of the shot for a good part of the time?
Would Biden’s legs have been in the center of the shot were he being interviewed?
Your Nation’s Energy Policy
Posted: September 12, 2008 Filed under: Politics | Tags: Interior Department, offshore drilling, scandal Leave a commentIt seems that a number of employees of the agency that collects royalties from oil and gas companies have gotten into a little trouble lately in what the Wall Street Journal quotes as a “culture of ethical failure” where they “allegedly” took gifts including money, drugs, and sexual favors from representatives of the companies they were supposed to be regulating.
According to the article, “some employees” of the agency, which an Interior Department report estimates to be a third of the agency’s staff, “frequently consumed alcohol at industry functions, had used cocaine and marijuana, and had sexual relations with oil and gas company representatives.”
The companies giving those gifts include Hess, Shell, Chevron, and another company.
To quote the WSJ again: “Democrats seized on the inspector general’s report as evidence of what they say is the Bush administration’s cozy relationship with the oil industry. Congressional Republicans accused Democrats of not following up on earlier Republican-led investigations of possible wrongdoing within the bureau.”
And here’s what really irks me: Again from the WSJ: “In recent years, the Interior Department has come under criticism … for mistakes … that allowed oil companies to avoid paying royalties for offshore-drilling rights — errors that government auditors have estimated will cost taxpayers as much as $10.5 billion over about 25 years.“
What a mess…another of many…

Jenny in Practice
Posted: September 11, 2008 Filed under: Dieting | Tags: Jenny Craig 1 CommentSo, yesterday I began the full Jenny experience. Started the morning with the Breakfast Stuffed Sandwich, which is basically a Hot Pocket filled with egg, cheddar and smoked ham. Not the most tasty thing I have ever eaten, but I’m not a fan of the Hot Pocket in general. I left about 1/4 of it on the plate. What I really wanted was the Sunshine Sandwich, which is like a turkey McMuffin, but they were out of that. Should have opted for cereal or something…maybe if I add some hot sauce or something next time? I also had some OJ as my fruit serving (1/4 cup) as I seem to be coming down with a cold, and that always helps.
For lunch, I had a salad with the Jenny Asian Sesame dressing. Not impressed by that. Too much soy, I think. In the future, I think I will do my own lo-cal dressings, as the selection at Jenny is limited. Also had the chicken sandwich. Probably would have been better if heated in toaster oven rather than microwave. But, I had been out all morning, and forgotten to eat the morning snack (more fruit) so that by the time lunch came, I was ravenously hungry. Toasting would have taken thirty minutes, and microwave took like two minutes, so you know which way I went. The bun came out a bit soggy, so I toasted it after. The chicken came out a little rubbery as well, though I kind of expected that. The honey mustard sauce that came with it was okay. I ate it like a stray dog since I was so hungry, but honestly, I don’t think I will be getting this for lunch again.
Mid-afternoon, I enjoyed the Jenny Anytime Bar in chocolate peanut butter flavor. It was okay, with an interesting texture to prolong the chewing experience. Just kidding, it actually wasn’t bad as far as protein bars go.

Chicken Fajitas in the foreground
Tonight there were chicken fajitas, which were actually quite tasty, plus I was allowed to put taco sauce on them, so they were even more enjoyable. There were two of them, and you heat the chicken, peppers and onions in a skillet with the powdered flavoring for five minutes and then roll them up in small tortillas. Overall, very satisfying.
All in all, I have to say, I wasn’t too hungry between the meals. I was allowed to have two fruits and pretty much carte blanche in the veggie dept. For lunch, I added the salad, and that kept me afloat for the better part of the afternoon.
In the evening I got a snack, chocolate graham twists. Now, on the package, they look a bit like chocolate covered pretzels. There are some shiny looking twists there, so I was expecting a carob-coated-chocolate like experience. In actuality, they were a pretzel-shaped-teddy-graham like substance. Not bad. A bit drier in texture than a teddy graham, but okay.
This was kind of a different day because we were busy in the evening with soccer practice and a meeting at Edison’s school. Manfrengensen had leftover chicken for dinner and the kids got chicken with their favorite (the only thing they all agree on) mac-n-cheese. Tomorrow will be more challenging as I will need to cook for all four of them in addition to making my own meal.
I also drank a good deal of water during the course of the day. It wasn’t bad, though I woke up hungry in the night. I’m thinking this is just an adjustment to diet mode. My body is still asking for more than the 1200 calories I gave it yesterday because it is used to being fed on demand. But I stepped on the scale this morning, and there was a difference (minus two pounds from Monday). Maybe some of that is the concerted effort I made before I started, and maybe some is Jenny, but I’m happy. Seeing the lower number on the scale is always motivational.

fawning, or anything like that. So anyway, she was making all this small talk, meanwhile, I’ve got the Princess with me, and she’s running the length of the hall, making like she’s going to leave without me.
of the Princess’s chair. She made a bit of a fuss over the Princess, as people sometimes do, and the Princess then proceeded to crawl into my lap and bury her face in my shirt. This was nothing out of the ordinary. The Princess is often shy of strangers at first, so though I was looking at her, I was making excuses to the woman, you know, she’s shy, etc.
